Why Golf in the Park?

Research shows that outdoor exercise in a green space is good for health and wellbeing. It can help reduce stress levels, enhance mood and even improve self-esteem. Taking part in group sessions, like Golf in the Park, can help alleviate loneliness and isolation.

Swinging a golf club and learning how to pitch and putt is a moderate exercise that anyone can enjoy, whatever their level of physical fitness, sporting abilities or their age. Participants also get the chance to interact with a variety of people, often from different backgrounds, in a safe, relaxed and friendly social setting with trained activators.

How does it work?

The basis of our Golf in the Park (GitP) programme is to provide anyone with the opportunity to play free golf in their local park surroundings over two hours weekly. Golf is perceived to be difficult, so at Community Golf, through our innovative GitP format, we aim to make it easier for people to just pick up a club and have a go in a comfortable “no-frills” environment. We have a firm belief that barriers including self-confidence, ability, time, lack of specialist equipment and financial restrictions should not exclude people from the opportunity of experiencing golf.

Families and friends get the chance to challenge themselves and each other by playing a 6-hole course with a few basic rules, whilst recording their scores on a scorecard to keep track and establish their own playing style in order to maximise their experience. They can further test their ability with a variety of unique skills games designed to suit all abilities.

Where?

In 2018, four separate partnerships with Get Active Wandle Valley, London Legacy Development Corporation, Metropolitan Housing and Guildford Borough Council enabled us to deliver weekly Golf in the Park sessions.  We delivered 86 hours across five different sites:

18 weeks from May to September
Beddington Park in Wallington & Wandle Park in Croydon

4 week programmes – August
Alfred Meadows in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park
Roundshaw Park in Wallington
Stoke Park in Guildford

May to September 2018

We had a total of 517 participants with 65% of them having played golf for the first time!

Wandle
Park

  • Never played golf before 78%

Beddington Park

We were tasked with a number of delivery guidelines across each project, but ultimately our partners were united by one aim:

Stoke      Park

Branding

Our distinctive yellow and black branded leaflets, on-site banners, tee box signage, flags, hole discs and scorecards enable us to create an authentic, meaningful golf experience for all participants. The distinctive branding of the project assisted participants familiarity and is designed to create a consistent and easily recognisable product.

Free range ball vouchers, in conjunction with The Oaks Golf Centre, were offered to regular players at both Wandle and Beddington Parks. The incentive was designed to offer a pathway to further golf experiences at a local facility.

“As always it is a pleasure working with Community Golf –  they always deliver what we are looking for”.
